米国ペンシルベニア州フィラデルフィアにあるテンプル大学の京都校が開校した。テンプル大学ジャパンキャンパス（東京）では、世界80ヵ国から学部生・大学院生2800名あまりが集い、多文化的・包摂的な環境で学んでいる。

その学生たちが京都校で学び、暮らし、「京都に住んでみる」。世界各国から訪れた学生たちの京都生活のアレコレ。学んだこと、知ったこと、感じたこと…を日本語と英語で徒然なるままに。

伏見稲荷大社に行ってきました！ 数多くの赤い鳥居が並び続いている京都の象徴的な伏見稲荷大社。私はインスタグラムなどで見たことはありましたが、実際訪れるのは初めてでした。実は土地勘が全くないもので、大学の仲間たちが「ここから歩いていける距離に神社があるから行こう！」というのに何も考えずについて行ったら、かの有名な伏見稲荷大社で「あ！これSNSで見たことあるやつだ！」と現地について1人で興奮していました。

Good morning, good afternoon, and good evening! This is Aisha.

I visited Fushimi Inari Taisha! This iconic Kyoto shrine is famous for its countless red torii gates. I had seen it on Instagram but this was my first time visiting in person.

To be honest, I have no sense of direction, so when my friends said, “There’s a shrine we can walk to from here, let’s go!” I followed them without much thought. It turned out to be the famous Fushimi Inari Taisha! When I arrived, I couldn’t help but exclaim to myself, “Oh! This is the one I’ve seen on social media!”

動画で見た時は一部のエリアにだけたくさん鳥居が立っていて、みんなそれを投稿しているのだと思っていましたが、実際はゆっくり歩いて30分程かかる軽いハイキングの道ながら麓から頂上までず〜〜〜〜〜っと鳥居が並び続いていました。びっくり！周りの木々の自然を感じつつ美しい鳥居の下を歩くのは、まるで憧れていた映画の中に入り込んだような気持ちになりました。これ建てた人大変だっただろうなあ。全部でいくつあるんだろう？

When I had watched videos of it, I thought the torii gates were only concentrated in one area, and that’s where everyone took their videos. But in reality, the torii gates stretch all the way from the base of the mountain to the summit. What a surprise! It was like a light hiking path that takes about 30 minutes to walk. Walking under the beautiful torii gates while surrounded by nature and the trees felt like stepping into a movie. I couldn’t help but think about how much effort it must have taken to build all of this. How many torii gates are there in total, I wonder?

大学の仲間たちと頂上で撮った集合写真（髪を直してて変なポーズ）。まだ新学期が始まったばかりで名前も知らない人も多かったですが、共に歩みを進める中で話も弾み、交流を深める良い時間となりました。引率をしてくれたピースサインをしている教授はアメリカ出身ですが、京都で育ち、京都を愛し、京都を自分の故郷だと思っていると話していました。彼はテンプル大学で “Envisioning & Exploring Kyoto”という京都に関する特別授業を受け持っており、私も受講しています。今学期、彼の授業を通じてどんな学びがあるのか楽しみです。

At the summit, we took a group photo (looking awkward because I was fixing my hair). Since the new semester has just started, there are still many people whose names I don’t know, but walking together gave us the chance to talk and bond.

The professor who led us (the one with a peace sign) was born in the United States but grew up here in Kyoto. He told us that he loves Kyoto and considers it his hometown. He teaches a special course at Temple University called “Envisioning & Exploring Kyoto”, which I’m also taking this semester. I’m really looking forward to seeing what I can learn from his class.

頂上から麓に戻り、敷地内を歩いていると猫ちゃんに会えました。人に慣れているのか私たちが近いても逃げることなくおすまし顔で身繕いをしていました。かわいい。猫かわいい。将来は大型犬と猫5匹くらいと住むのが私のひそかな夢です。

On the way back down, we strolled through the grounds and came across a cat! He seemed so used to people that it didn’t run away when we got close, instead calmly grooming itself with an air of composure. So cute. Cats are adorable. One of my secret dreams is to live with a big dog and about five cats in the future 😀

初めて京都らしいところに来ることができて京都にいるんだなあと再実感することができました。次はどこに行こうかな？

This was my first time visiting a place that truly felt like Kyoto, and it reminded me that I’m actually here! I wonder where I should go next?
